Itโ€™s the first Wednesday of the month, which means itโ€™s Insecure Writers Support Group day. The purpose is to share and encourage, express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak, as well as offer assistance and guidance. Itโ€™s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds! Make sure to check out other writersโ€™ posts here.

Can you believe itโ€™s already December? How did that happen? Soon 2015 will be over!

How was November? Did you participate in NaNoWriMo? If you did do NaNo, there are several ways you could be feeling โ€“ elated itโ€™s over and you won, disappointed you didnโ€™t write 50k words, burnt out, or somewhere in between.

I spent November working on my second draft, which I will continue working on until completion. I hope thatโ€™ll be end of December/early January.

November has been a month full of lessons for me, the biggest being managing expectations. I thought I could go at nearly NaNo speed with this draft, but quickly learned that thatโ€™s not going to happen. I thought I had the story and characters figured out, and then I kept stumbling and realized I need to do some more background work.

โ€œThat was the thing about the world: it wasn’t that things were harder than you thought they were going to be, it was that they were hard in ways that you didn’t expect.โ€
โ€• Lev Grossman, The Magician King

The first draft is like gathering all your materials and supplies. This second draft is teaching me that the gathering doesnโ€™t stop, but it also shouldnโ€™t stop my writing. Iโ€™ve been slowly but steadily making progress. I know more and more about my story and the characters. The second draft is not as fun as the first, but I still enjoy it immensely.

My take away from the month is this: whatever you did or did not accomplish pat yourself on the back, forgive yourself if necessary, and keep going. Oh, and have a cupcake. Life is always better with cupcakes.

Have a wonderful month!

โ€œOh, Marilla, looking forward to things is half the pleasure of them,โ€ exclaimed Anne. โ€œYou maynโ€™t get the things themselves; but nothing can prevent you from having the fun of looking forward to them. Mrs. Lynde says, โ€˜Blessed are they who expect nothing for they shall not be disappointed.โ€™ But I think it would be worse to expect nothing than to be disappointed.โ€
โ€• L.M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables

Cupcakes do make everything better ๐Ÿ™‚ I signed up for NaNoWriMo this year but didn’t complete the challenge, so your post really resonated with me. Thanks so much for sharing!

My life is full of festive mince pies instead of cup cakes, but I see your point. I can’t quite reach my back to pat it – my achievements (re writing) this month are zero, so I don’t deserve it. Still, 2016 is a new year, and it beckons. ๐Ÿ™‚ X

I love cupcakes. And broccoli! I have trouble managing expectations of myself too. Generally I have started deciding how long it will take me to accomplish something and then doubling it.

Best of luck with your second draft. I’m working on mine too and hop to be finished by the end of January (originally December!)

I think I may have to start doubling the time. But then it means this draft will be finished in February?! I’m just going to keep at it and not think about time for now.

Good luck on getting yours finished as well. May time be ever in your favor. ๐Ÿ˜‰

…NaNoWriMo wasn’t a bust for me. My goal was to draft 0, getting down on paper the lives of my characters, getting inside their head, knowing their fears and desires. My goals for NaNoWriMo was not about the word count but writing the major plot points and back story. The drafts after that will be focused on digging deeper and polishing.

Those second drafts do take time, don’t they? Revising is such a different process than laying down the initial track for a story.

I had an odd NaNoWriMo this year…I wrote the first draft in ten days. Nothing like that has ever happened before! In January and February I will return to research…the draft has told me where I need to gather more information (it’s historical fiction). I’m really happy with the initial draft, though.

I’d be so happy with such a quick first draft. I recently came up with an idea for a new book, and I’ve pretty much outlined all of it. As soon as this 2nd draft is done (I’m still hopeful about end of December or early January), I’ll do a first draft. I think it may come up fairly quickly as well. I did the outline in a day. It’s the first time a fully formed story appeared to me out of nowhere.
Best of luck to you on your research.

Love both quotes, esp. the one from Anne of Green Gables. Like you, I don’t know where 2015 went. l didn’t accomplish all my goals, but that’s okay. I’m farther ahead than I was last year at this time.

    Best wishes,

That’s my approach to it as well. I am also farther ahead, and so even though I may not have accomplished all I set out to do this year, I am pretty pleased with what I have accomplished.

The forgiveness step is so necessary! I strained my creative brain to do Nano this year right after finishing another draft. Not sure if that was good or bad, but I am definitely taking a break.

Two drafts in a row is pretty intense. That’s my plan once I finish this 2nd draft: to write a first draft of the next novel.

Loved both the quotes. And I think you’re the only other person who doesn’t like the second draft as much as the first. When I wrote a post on it, I was in the minority. EVERYONE loved the second draft better than the first. Glad to know I’m not a total weirdo. Well, not in that sense.

I love the rush of writing the first draft, all the unknowns and mysteries. It’s like meeting a new love and the beginning of a relationship. I didn’t realize I was in the minority.

Life is indeed better with cupcakes. I actually like the second draft better than the first…but only because my first drafts are so messy and bad that anything is an improvement over that.

When you put it that way, the 2nd draft wins hands down over first. I personally love the discovery aspect of the first draft. The 2nd draft is different, but also fun. It’s also where things finally start to come together, at least for me, and I’m finally realizing how to write what I intended and not just what came out. (If that makes sense)

Love the Lev Grossman quote. So true! I’m glad you’re still enjoying your second draft. I much prefer writing to editing but it’s good to know you’re still writing in your second draft. Keeps some of the fun in. ๐Ÿ™‚

Sarah, the first draft was so bad it’s embarrassing, but I had so much fun writing it and not everything I wrote was useless. I have a feeling I may be writing more in subsequent drafts, but the way I am working at this, once I have draft 2 completed it will be a finished manuscript – not the final version, but one that can be sent to others for critiquing.

    Yum! Chocolate cupcakes!

I admire people who sign up for NaNoWriMo, even if they don’t complete the insane 50k words. I’m not nearly that ambitious โ€“ so here’s to them! *clink!*

Then there are writers like Stephen King who don’t need NaNoWriMo to crank out the words.

Thanks. Speed can definitely help to get the words down, but then we do need to slow down at some point to make sure everything is working.

Good luck on your draft! I think it’s awesome you were able to use the momentum of NaNo in a way that worked for you, and not beat yourself up when things didn’t go exactly as planned. As writers, we have to do what works for us, and that usually doesn’t fit into a perfect cookie cutter of some other writer’s process.

I’m really pleased with how this draft is shaping up, so I try not to be bothered so much by the speed. It will be much more resolved than the first. I feel I’ve finally found a pace I can maintain most times, and consistency is much better than a month of 50,000 words and then no writing.
