About

Hi! My name is Urszula Humienik and I am a broccoli addict (and basically anything green 💚).

Welcome.

About this blog

This blog began as a vegan cooking blog in 2011 (if you go back far enough, you can find my recipes). Then in 2014, I decided to switch to a more personal blog about writing — my own as well as others. I started gaining momentum by joining online writing challenges. This blog grew and transformed until it became something much greater than I could have imagined. In 2016, I decided to move to my own domain and was there for a while. I was also occasionally but regularly publishing on Medium.

In March 2023, I decided to return to this blog for various reasons.

  1. I love the name
  2. I want a place to just write whatever I feel like writing at the moment without pressure for it to be “something.” This feels like the right place for that.
  3. I miss the community I built around this blog, and I hope to rebuild it.

So about me

I grew up in Chicago, a beautiful but tough city I love. I went to St. Hyacinth Catholic Grade School in the Avondale neighborhood, where I grew up. I graduated from Whitney M. Young Magnet High School, where Michelle Obama is also an alumni. Then, I went to The School of the Art Instititue of Chicago, receiving a BFA in studio art. Can you tell I love Chicago?

Although Chicago will always have a special place in my heart, in 2006 I decided to follow my dream and move to Poland. I wrote about that here. My family’s Polish-American, some living in the US and some distant relatives in Poland. I now have a husband and son, and live in a town called BiaÅ‚ystok in northeastern Poland.

I also studied and received a diploma in art therapy. I taught it for a while at the Medical University of Bialystok. A few years ago I also became a certified yoga and meditation teacher. I teach yoga some mornings and evenings. In that aspect, I’ve started to further my knowledge of polyvagal theory and being trauma-informed. My next step in my yoga teaching is to become certified in trauma-informed yoga teaching within the next few years.

I mainly make my living through editing, proofreading, and writing. I specialize in health, wellness, and medicine. I supplement this with yoga teaching.

Of course, this isn’t everything about me. Read my blog to learn more.

Love the Thomas Mann quote – makes me feel better about my struggles with writing. Also, love the way you seem to approach life. Nice “about” section. I look forward to reading more from you.

Thank you for the follow. One day I may need you services in connection with a novel I’m writing that has a Polish component – set in London but with flash backs and Polish expats. If you’re interested you can reply here or drop me a mail at Glepard@saqnet.co.uk sometime. Oh and while I’m not vegan I’m with you on broccoli.

hi, thanks for the follow. Thomas Mann is one of my favourite authors (as a German), even if I’ve distanced myself a little bit from him during the last 10 years (hint: never read an author’s diaries).
And finally I got to know what NaNoWriMo is. I’ve seen this so often, but I didn’t know exactly what it was.
    But broccoli??? Oh my.

My favorite ways of eating broccoli are raw or steamed. I know, boring. I just love its taste.

Have you tried cream of broccoli soup or a nice rich sauce on top of broccoli?

Soup is not a bad idea. I sometimes make a soup out of different vegetables. I could try to add Broccoli for a start. 🙂

    Hi Ula,
It’s been great going through the A-Z Challenge with you. I am going to catch up on the posts I missed and I suspect probably do the whole A-Z journey tonight. It’s been interesting reading the whole lot in one go and also to visit my own posts. Sure, of course, I’m writing about the more sensational or newsworthy aspects of my life but I really do come across as being quite out there throughout the challenge. Every day life is not as exciting although never dull. ONce this never-ending rain clears, I’m off to the local Japanese gardens xx Rowena

Thanks Ula for the follow. I’ve never met a broccoli addict before. You’re absolutely right that one needs life experiences to write. And by the way we have your first three experiences in common, except I taught English to uninterested high school students. Romeo and Juliet was not a hit. 🙂

You’ve working in banking, fashion, and education? What are the odds?! High school students are tough. I was fortunate enough to teach university students and adults. I was one of those English nerds that loved pretty much everything we had to read in high school. I may have been an English teacher’s dream. (I don’t know for sure, I never asked.)
      Thanks for stopping by.

This is fascinating. I went to Bialystok for the first time this past summer, I was there only briefly, but it seems like a wonderful city (despite being on the very Eastern border). Whereabouts in Poland do you live now? I live in Torun (studying in Edinburgh but currently all is remote). Chicago is somewhere I’ve always wanted to go to, and North America is my dream living destination, and technically I’ve been to Chicago, but only because I had a layover flight there on my way from London to South Carolina. All the best to you and I hope I get to read one of your books one day.

Hey, yes, I am in Poland now – I returned just about two weeks ago. I graduated from Edinburgh Uni and afterwards spent the last year and a half in Brighton in England but now I’m back in Torun. 🙂
